May 2011 – Minneapolis, Minn. – Krech, O’Brien, Mueller & Associates’ client Moksha Yoga recently announced that its new Minneapolis location will officially open on May 28, 2011. This will be its first studio in the United States. Moksha (pronounced: mOk’sha) hot yoga is a unique series of 40 postures that combine the precision of therapeutic yoga and the foundations of traditional yoga in a special studio heated to 99-102 degrees Fahrenheit.
Working alongside partner Engelsma Construction, KOMA provided structural engineering, architecture, and interior design services for Moksha Yoga’s approximately 6,000-square-feet of space. KOMA designed two unique studio spaces (one large – the hot room – and one small) along with locker rooms and a retail-focused entryway and foyer. Primary design features of the space include a cork studio floor, a heating system that uses radiant heating panels, VOC-free paints, and filtered showers and faucets.
KOMA architect Marc DuBois, AIA, said, “This was a unique project and we really enjoyed working with owners Ryann and Phil Doucette, and with Engelsma Construction. Creating a space that fulfilled the need for a large, temperature-controlled studio while still keeping a more retail-focused point of entry meant giving careful consideration to variables like mechanical systems, material transitions and lighting.”
Benefits of “hot yoga” range from weight loss to improved athletic ability to a reduction in joint and muscle pain. Located near Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis’ Uptown neighborhood, the studio is expected to open on Saturday, May 28. For more information, visit www.mokshayogaminneapolis.com.
